September News from Canadian Martyrs – There is a lot! Take some time to go through it this week…
A Prayer for Our Students:
Thank you for the gift of education in every form. As our children prepare to start a new year, may CONFIDENCE be their foundation, may GRACE be their guide and may HOPE be their compass towards a bright future.
We pray they would have the EYES to see the needs of those around them, and a HEART to love well. May they face each day with POSITIVITY, knowing that no matter what comes their way, they do not have to face it alone. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Important Information for 2018-2019:
What a summer it has been at Canadian Martyrs! We have undergone a significant amount of construction work including a new library/Learning Commons, new lighting throughout the school, new whiteboards, shelving and cupboards in the classroom, and most excitingly, classroom air conditioning units! All bulletin boards have been replaced, floors have been updated in some areas, coat hooks are brand new….and the list goes on!
We are not 100% completed as of yet, but we are ready for our kids! They will see some contractors from time to time and additional work will be done after hours occasionally, but what an improvement to our building! We look forward to showing it off to everyone at our “Meet the Teacher” night on September 12, 2018.
Our Sneak Peek is Back!
Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 10:00 – 5:00pm we will have our front doors open for you! Please stop by and pick up your first day package and find out who your teacher will be!
Due to privacy laws, only parents/guardians are able to pick up their own child’s package. We cannot provide this information to friends and neighbour’s unless we have written consent to do so.
Stop by the school on August 29 and get all of your important information!
Day One at Canadian Martyrs!
Due to the fact that our students will know who their teacher is before the first day of school, our first day will be fairly routine! Our staff will be on the yard to greet all students and parents by 8:55am. At 9:10am when our bell rings, teachers will gather their classes and bring them inside. We would ask that parents wish their children good luck and give hugs outside. We will then enter and get our day started by singing O’Canada and a morning prayer. If you are unsure of where to go on the first day, please come to the office and we will help you out!
Thank you again to our Catholic School Council for covering the majority of the cost of the agendas again this year. We will be asking that each student from Grade 1-8 brings $3.00 to help cover the cost. This can be done through School Cash Online.
Eco Team News
We have some big changes coming at Canadian Martyrs in order to demonstrate more effective stewardship for our earth.
- Boomerang Lunches: On a specific schedule (TBD), all wrappers and other garbage from snacks and lunches (e.g., zip-loc bags, juice boxes, etc.), will be returned home at the end of the day. Realizing that this does not actually reduce the amount of garbage, our hope is that it will cause families to plan for “garbage-less lunches” with reusable containers and buying groceries in bulk (e.g., buy one large yogurt container and scoop it into reusable containers instead of single serve yogurts). Stay tuned for more information coming soon!
- Ban the Bottle! We are no longer wanting plastic water bottles at Canadian Martyrs. We are only allowing refillable water bottles to be used. The amount of plastic water bottles used each day is staggering and we need to take steps to help out! No plastic water bottles please! **Refillable water bottles with the Canadian Martyrs logo will be available for sale in September!
- Recycling and Composting will be happening in the classroom on a daily basis. Our Eco-Team will be responsible for teaching our students about proper recycling habits. Please support us by having the students participate in recycling at home! Positive habits are built over time!
There will be many other initiatives from our Eco-Team this year! Stay tuned Crusaders!
Meet the Teacher Night!
Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 12, 2018 and come and see us! Tour the building and take a look at the construction project. Most importantly, meet your child’s teacher! Remember Me Family Catering will be on hand to cater the event providing Hamburger and Hot Dog combo’s for $7.00. Look forward to seeing all of you there!

Important Busing Information:
If you are a parent of a bused student, please be sure to check your child’s busing details on the transportation website beginning August 21st. You will need your child’s OEN # to access their information which you can obtain off their report card.
The website is: www.stswr.ca. Busing routes and times can change depending on new students being added or new areas on the bus route. Please do not assume that your child’s bus information will remain the same as the previous school year.
School Bus Loading Zone:
Due to the fact that Confederation Drive has been designated a “School Zone”, the school busses are required to have their flashing lights on and the stop arm and the stop sign out while the students are loading. Please continue to demonstrate patience and understanding as we strive towards safety for our kids. Thanks for your cooperation!
Safe Pick up and Drop Off Areas:
Please pay close attention to the signage on the streets when you are dropping off and picking up your children. There is no stopping and no drop off/pick up in front of the school. If you are crossing the street (Halifax or Confederation) please be a good role model for your children and use the crossing guard at the corner.
School Parking Lot:
The school parking lot is for staff parking only. Parents are welcome to use the ring road in the parking lot before school as a ‘kiss & drop’ but should not be parking and exiting their vehicle. After school the ring road should not be used as a pick-up point as buses are pulling in and many children are exiting the building at this time and this would be a safety issue.
Playground Structure Use and the Extended Day Program:
We offer the Extended Day Program at school from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. At times, the creative playground is used with the students enrolled in the program for physical activity and games. As such, the creative playground will be off limits for students not enrolled in the program from 4:10pm to 6:00 pm. Parents and students who are not in the program are welcomed to use the creative playground up until 4:10 pm only. Thank you for your cooperation.
Medication at School:
If you will require your child to receive ANY form of medication, either over the counter (e.g., Tylenol, Advil, etc.), or prescription, the school is required to have on file, your signed consent. Please contact the office, our board website or your child’s teacher if you require an “Administration of Oral Medication” form for your child(ren). We are not able to accept a verbal request to administer any form of medication.
Peanut Free School Environment:
We have several students and staff attending Canadian Martyrs School with a severe allergy that can cause an anaphylactic reaction. All of us need to do what we can to provide these members of our community with a safe learning and working environment. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we respectfully ask that you do not send food products that contain peanuts, peanut butter or nut products, remembering to check ingredients carefully. WOW butter and other peanut substitutes are also not permitted. Please do not bring dogs into the school as we also have some students who are highly allergic to pet dander. Your understanding and cooperation are most appreciated.
Visitors in the School:
Parents/Guardians are asked to help make our school a safe one by remembering our safe school dismissal guidelines. The Board policy is that all visitors to a school must sign in at the main office. This policy is designed to protect children from coming in contact with a stranger. If you are coming to school during the day to meet your child(ren), please go directly to the office to sign in. Your understanding is much appreciated.
As always…Parents on the Yard…
Adults on the school yard can pose a great safety risk. We are asking for your continued help and support by dropping your children off in the morning and letting them find their friends on the yard. We would ask that parents then wait, if you feel you must, by the shed near the parking lot. We need parents to stay away from the playground equipment. Also, if you have something that you need to get to your child throughout the day, please come to the office and sign in. We can get items delivered to them. Please do not walk onto the school yard from the sidewalks. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact the main office.
Please use the Crossing Guard…
For your safety, please make sure that you and your children are crossing the street with the crossing guard at the corner of Confederation Drive and Halifax Drive. We have been encouraging your children to do this but we need your help to be a role model.
Communication Guidelines for Parents/Guardians:
At Canadian Martyrs Catholic School, we encourage a cooperative, constructive and respectful approach in resolving concerns with students and adults.
Waterloo Catholic District School Board Policy:
- Speak to the teacher, Issue resolved.
Step Two: (if not resolved)
- Speak to the principal
- If you have not spoken to the teacher, the principal will ask you to do so.
- The principal will involve the teacher in the discussions.
- The principal may request, at any time in the process, that you put your concerns in writing.
- The principal may involve, at any time in the process, others who may be helpful in resolving the concern; supports from the school board, employee group representatives, the local parish, and community agencies.
The role of Trustee: You may contact the trustee at any time. The trustee will direct you to follow the process outlined above.
The role of Catholic School Council: Catholic School Councils were established to advise the principal on matters such as the school curriculum and the school code of behaviour. Catholic School Council meetings are not forums to discuss individual parent-teacher issues. If these matters are brought to any school council member or any school council meeting, the concern is to be referred immediately to the principal.
Do you want to be a part of the Canadian Martyrs Community?
We are looking for anyone who would like to be a Lunch Hour Supervisor next school year. This is a paid position that would require an interview with Mr. Spitzig and some paid training. Then, you would work for an hour a day over lunch with the kids in the classroom and on the yard. If our current Lunch Hour Supervisors return next year, then you would be on our LHS Supply list and we would call you directly to cover on days when they are sick or unable to come to school.
If you would like to be a Lunch Hour Supervisor and a part of our community, please contact the office to set up an interview. Thanks!
If you have any questions about any items listed, please contact the main office.
Looking forward to seeing you soon Crusaders!
