April News from Canadian Martyrs
An Easter Prayer…
Lord, the Resurrection of Your Son has given us new life and renewed HOPE.
Help us to live as new people.
Grant us wisdom to know what we must do,
The will to want to do it,
The courage to undertake it,
The perseverance to continue to do it,
And the strength to complete it.

Parents on the Yard…
Adults on the school yard can pose a great safety risk. We are asking for your continued help and support by dropping your children off in the morning and letting them find their friends on the yard. We would ask that parents then wait, if you feel you must, by the shed near the parking lot. Also, if you have something that you need to get to your child throughout the day, please come to the office and sign in. We can get items delivered to them. Please do not walk onto the school yard during a recess break. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact the main office.
Parking, Parking, Parking…
Just a reminder that our parking lot is barely big enough for our staff. We need to keep our parking lot for staff only. If you are picking up your child, please use the side street parking. Please pay close attention to the signs that tell you when you can and cannot park on the roads.
Please use the Crossing Guard…
For your safety, please make sure that you and your children are crossing the street with the crossing guard at the corner of Confederation Drive and Halifax Drive. We have been encouraging your children to do this but we need your help to be a role model.
Lunch Time Information…
If your child has permission to go off school property at lunch on any particular day, we require a note from a parent advising us of this. We will not be allowing students to call parents asking for permission to go off property prior to lunchtime. Please make sure that any special lunch arrangements are made in advance. Thanks for your continued support and cooperation.
Class Lists for September of 2018…
Many factors are considered in the creation of class lists including academic abilities and needs, social groupings and gender ratio’s. The teachers and administration take great care to ensure that there is a balance across all classrooms. In the past, we have received numerous requests to have students placed with a specific teacher. Please know that we have your child’s best interests at heart and we will do everything to ensure a best fit for your child(ren). Please do not submit requests for an individual teacher to administration or the current classroom teacher. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation! Canadian Martyrs Staff.
Our Continued focus on Student Achievement…
The staff and students of Canadian Martyrs continue to do their best toward celebrating and demonstrating student learning. Below are the three tests that will take place this spring:
GRADE 4’s – CANADIAN COGNITIVE ACHIEVEMENT TEST (CCAT) – APRIL 23– 27, 2018
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board is administering the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (CCAT) to Grade 4 students throughout the system. This test is a valuable tool for educators and parents, and assists us toward further identifying your child’s learning strengths and needs. The test will be spread over 3 days (three subtests ranging from 30 – 60 minutes each) and is composed of a verbal, non-verbal and quantitative battery. The purpose of the CCAT is to:
- Identify your child’s areas of strength and areas of need,
- Provide information about your child’s learning style(s),
- Provide direction to your child’s teacher on instructional methods, learning materials and the pace of instruction.
GRADE 7’s – CAT-4 (CANADIAN ACHIEVEMENT TEST, 4th Edition)
April 30 – May 4th, 2018
The CAT-4 test is a standardized test which measures achievement in the basic skills generally taught in schools across Canada. CAT is a set of tests on reading, mathematics, language, writing and spelling. The results of students tested with CAT are compared with those obtained from large, representative samples of students from across Canada. Their results can also be compared to curriculum expectations. CAT is the only Canadian owned and Canadian designed national test. In addition to its use by schools, part of CAT has been chosen by statistics Canada as the basis for tracking achievement over time.
EQAO TESTING 2018– GRADES 3 & 6
This year’s cohorts of Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will participate in the Primary and Junior EQAO testing. The testing is spread over 3 school days and consists of 2 one-hour blocks for a total of 6 hours. The testing is based on the regular grade level curriculum expectations for reading, writing and mathematics. This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning based on their respective grade level curriculum expectations. The Grade 3’s will write the test on May 22nd – May 25th, and the Grade 6’s on May 28th – May 31st, 2018.
Please mark your calendars today, and avoid booking appointments on these dates.

Knowledgehook, is now a Board approved “Green Tool” which ensures student information is stored in a secure manner. This online, interactive math resource will support student learning in grades 3-8. Knowledgehook will provide additional math support and instruction for learning both in the classroom and for differentiated home-practice. If you have any questions or concerns about this program please speak to your child’s classroom teacher.
