 Safe Arrival Program:

A reminder to please phone in your child’s absence or lateness.  The office number is 519-578-7579.  Our answering machine is on 24 hours a day!  Thank you for your continued support!

Dear Crusader Community!  We need your help with two very specific issues.

  1. Parents On Our Yard: If you are dropping your children off in the morning and you feel that you need to wait until the bell rings, we would ask that you wait by the shed, off to the side.  Parents should not be on the playground while the children are outside.  This makes supervision and safety very difficult for our staff.  A HUGE Thank You! to all of those parents who are already doing this.  We appreciate your support!
  2. Student Lateness: We are a 9:10am school.  This is one of the latest start times in the entire board.  In spite of this, we have MANY students who are coming in late, after the bell, during O’Canada and our morning prayer.  Please help us to get our day started quickly by encouraging your children to be on time or dropping them off just before the bell.  Thanks for your support with this as well…

Important Reminders:

Finish Strong Crusaders!!
Hey Crusaders!  We are immersed in sunshine and weather that reminds us of the summer!  It is so important that we keep our focus on what we have yet to accomplish this year!  There is still a lot of learning left to do this year to help prepare you for next.  It is important to look ahead, but not so much that you miss the present…Stay focused Crusaders!  Finish the 2017-2018 school year strong!

Summer Renovations at Canadian Martyrs!!
We have very exciting news!  This summer Canadian Martyrs will be under significant construction!  The WCDSB has selected Canadian Martyrs for some significant upgrades including LED lighting throughout our building, new cupboards and counter tops in each classroom and a new heating and air conditioning system!  That’s right!  Air Conditioning!  There will be many trades in and out of the building all summer long.  If you have any questions about the upcoming renovation, please contact the office.

Parents on the Yard…
Adults on the school yard can pose a great safety risk.  We are asking for your continued help and support by dropping your children off in the morning and letting them find their friends on the yard.  We would ask that parents then wait, if you feel you must, by the shed near the parking lot.  Also, if you have something that you need to get to your child throughout the day, please come to the office and sign in.  We can get items delivered to them.  Please do not walk onto the school yard during a recess break.  If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact the main office.

Parking, Parking, Parking…
Just a reminder that our parking lot is barely big enough for our staff.  We need to keep our parking lot for staff only.  If you are picking up your child, please use the side street parking.  Please pay close attention to the signs that tell you when you can and cannot park on the roads.

Please use the Crossing Guard…
For your safety, please make sure that you and your children are crossing the street with the crossing guard at the corner of Confederation Drive and Halifax Drive.  We have been encouraging your children to do this but we need your help to be a role model.

Lunch Time Information…
If your child has permission to go off school property at lunch on any particular day, we require a note from a parent advising us of this. We will not be allowing students to call parents asking for permission to go off property prior to lunchtime.  Please make sure that any special lunch arrangements are made in advance.  Thanks for your continued support and cooperation.

Class Lists for September of 2018…

Many factors are considered in the creation of class lists including academic abilities and needs, social groupings and gender ratio’s.  The teachers and administration take great care to ensure that there is a balance across all classrooms.  In the past, we have received numerous requests to have students placed with a specific teacher.  Please know that we have your child’s best interests at heart and we will do everything to ensure a best fit for your child(ren).  Please do not submit requests for an individual teacher to administration or the current classroom teacher.  Thank you for your continued support and cooperation!  Canadian Martyrs Staff.

Our Continued focus on Student Achievement…

The staff and students of Canadian Martyrs continue to do their best toward celebrating and demonstrating student learning. Congratulations to our Grade 4 students and our Grade 7 students who have completed their Spring testing.  The CCAT and CAT-4 test data will really help us with programming effectively!  Your efforts with these tests were very much appreciated!

Grade 3’s and Grade 6’s, it’s almost your turn to shine!

This year’s cohorts of Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will participate in the Primary and Junior EQAO testing. The testing is spread over 3 school days and consists of 2 one-hour blocks for a total of 6 hours. The testing is based on the regular grade level curriculum expectations for reading, writing and mathematics. This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning based on their respective grade level curriculum expectations. The Grade 3’s will write the test on May 22nd – May 25th, and the Grade 6’s on May 28th – May 31st, 2018.

Please mark your calendars today, and avoid booking appointments on these dates.

Do you want to be a part of the Canadian Martyrs Community?
We are looking for anyone who would like to be a Lunch Hour Supervisor next school year.  This is a paid position that would require an interview with Mr. Spitzig and some paid training.  Then, you would work for an hour a day over lunch with the kids in the classroom and on the yard.  If our current Lunch Hour Supervisors return next year, then you would be on our LHS Supply list and we would call you directly to cover on days when they are sick or unable to come to school.
If you would like to be a Lunch Hour Supervisor and a part of our community, please contact the office to set up an interview.  Thanks!

Frozen Yogurt is here!

For the months of May and June we will be offering Frozen Yogurt on Friday’s! These months are hot at Canadian Martyrs and we hope this treat will help to cool the kids down! This will be for sale through “School Cash Online” only, so please register today to avoid any complications. We thank our Catholic School Council and our parent volunteers for organizing this initiative for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.

The Annual MudPuppy Chase is back!

This is the 3rd year Canadian Martyrs will participate in the MudPuppy Chase! Schools, families, and organizations run to raise money for Kids Ability.  A “Newswire” was already sent with all of the necessary information, but in case you missed it, here are some additional details:

The race is Sunday May 6th at Columbia Fields at the University of Waterloo. Please consider running in either the 3 km race (9:00am) or the 5 km race (10:20am). The cost of the race is a minimum of $35, which can be raised by runners through pledges!  There will be a large number of staff running this year!  Looking forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions about any items listed, please contact the main office.

Keep working hard Crusaders!
